Usūl al-Qirā'āt
A study of the Usūl of Shātibiyyah & Durrah for advanced students
The Usūl al-Qirāʾāt programme offers a rigorous and structured study of the foundational principles of the ten canonical Qirāʾāt.
The curriculum is based on two classical texts: Ḥirz al-Amānī wa Wajh al-Tahānī (al-Shāṭibiyyah) by Imām al-Shāṭibī, covering the seven canonical Qirāʾāt, and al-Durra al-Muḍīyah fī al-Qirāʾāt al-Thalāth al-Marḍiyyah (al-Durrah) by Imām Ibn al-Jazarī, covering the remaining three.
The lessons are delivered in an integrated manner: one chapter of al-Shāṭibiyyah is taught, followed by the corresponding chapter of al-Durrah. This systematic approach enables students to master the principles of all ten Qirāʾāt simultaneously, while appreciating the interrelationship between the two classical works.
Upon completion of both texts, students will undertake a collective reading of the ten Qirāʾāt, consolidating their theoretical knowledge through practical application and recitation.
This course is designed for serious students of Qurʾānic sciences who already possess a strong foundation in Tajwīd and seek to progress into the specialised study of Qirāʾāt, maintaining a direct connection to the classical scholarly tradition.
